(No. 104.)

No. 1.

Sir J. Jordan to Sir Edward Grey.-(Received June 6.)

(Telegraphic.) P.

RAILWAY loan negotiations.

Peking, June 6, 1909.

The letters of assurance referred to in my telegram No. 103 of yesterday's date were exchanged this morning.

The assurance given by the Chinese delegates, acting in Chang Chih-tung's name, was to the effect that the bank were at liberty to give the agency for the purchase of material to the British and Chinese Corporation, and that no objection would be raised thereto by the Chinese. On the other hand, Mr. Hillier gave an undertaking that the Corporation would no longer be represented here by Mr. Bland, who was to leave

China,

The representatives of the British, French, and German financial groups, and the Chinese delegates, subsequently initialled the agreement for the loan.
